Who We Are
Antarctica Repertory Theatre was founded by Stand Up Comics Joseph and Leviticus Miller of Birmingham, Alabama in 1994, on the misty shores of Antarctica’s Cape Krasinskiy. The Brothers from other Mothers were half siblings by birth, and blood siblings by a full body blood transfusion procedure in ‘87. In 1989, The O-Negative Duo set off across the country to hone their craft, performing whenever they could in Laundromats, Dive Bars, and Airport Terminals. Though their stand-up careers were middling at best, they did find notoriety in their side hustle, jingle writing. Some of their more well known work, including Slap Bracelets (1991-1992), Big League Chew (1990), and later Hotwired.com (1994), propelled them to success, and by late Summer 1994, the pair found themselves with more money than they knew what to do with.
So, the tandem set sail, riding southbound currents on a small steamboat to what is now the coast of New Schwabenland, Antarctica, with nothing but a dream, the clothes on their back, and north of $500,000 in liquid cash. Upon arriving in Northern Antarctica, the two friends (brothers?) built what is now the Les Paul Memorial Cabin with the help of for-hire natives. The building took 123 Days and 6 lives to complete. While the original intent for the cabin was to provide a space for young Stand-Ups to try out new material without fear of being canceled (Think Joe Rogan’s Comedy Mothership, but in the 90’s.), Leviticus and Joseph eventually fell unto the indomitable social tide of 90’s Musical Theatre. And 528,600 minutes later, Antarctica Repertory Theatre was born.
The inaugural season at Antarctica Rep included Meredith Wilson’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Rome and Weidman’s I Can Get It For You Wholesale, and a queer adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s timeless classic Waiting for Godot. Despite the initial backlash of producing something as socially taboo as The Unsinkable Molly Brown, the dyad knew that the yellow brick road to success was not going to be kind to them. After all, what came next was going to change the hierarchy of power in The Krasinskiy Cape forever.
The 1994 Antarctica Repertory Theatre’s Christmas Spectacular! was nothing short of, well, spectacular. Inspired by Classic Vaudeville Acts and Barry Manilow’s general vibe, the annual extravaganza has been dazzling audiences for over three decades now. Tap Dancing, Singing, and Regular Dancing blend together seamlessly in a show The Atlantic called “…really…good…in fact…couldn’t breathe” (R. Stine. 2003).
Antarctica Repertory Theatre has been in operation ever since. Even the Coronavirus couldn’t slow us down! We stayed 100% open with no masks or social distancing. Our mission is to provide life-altering theatre to our incredible patrons, regardless of social or global circumstances. Our Spring, Summer, and Winter shows are announced during our New Year’s Eve Gala Spectacular.
So pull up a chair, grab a drink, and be ready to stay inside the theater for days on end in case polar bears decide to make camp right in front of our doors in protest of our operating policies. We can’t wait to see you at The Rep!
